My, How Times Have Changed.

In the 1971 film version of Roald Dahl’s children’s book, Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory, Augustas Gloop, the greedy boy who is always eating was epitomised as a puppy fat laden child.

However in the 2005 version, Charlie and The Chocolate Factory, he is depicted as a rather over weight child. This is an interesting comparison of how our global image of  people gaining weight via over eating has changed.

Hedgehog – The Gardeners Friend.

No we didn’t know that either! These nocturnal creatures are considered the gardeners friend as they help keep most garden pests under control. Though Gardeners need to be careful of cutting grass and bushes as these are the preferred sleeping places of these spikey little creatures.
Up to 17 species of Hedgehog can be found on most continents except The America’s and Australia. The Hedgehog’s defining feature is it’s ability to roll up into a ball to protect itself, though the desert Hedgehog will attempt to run away as it is lighter in build.
This little scamp, sorry no other word for it, looks as happy as a Hedgehog in soap suds!

Words With Furry Friends.

Scrabble began it’s creation in 1938 when American Alfred Mosher Butts improved on an earlier game he invented called ‘Lexiko’. He worked out the frequency of letters used in words to create the point system common to Scrabble players nowadays, it was called Criss-Crosswords.

The game concept was bought by James Brunot who made 2400 sets of the game, sadly losing money. However, as is the way with these things, a Millionaire enters the picture and we see fate turn in favour of the board game. Macy’s President Jack Strauss played the game on vacation and made sure his store was stocked with it upon his return. The rest, as they say, is history and the true scrabble geeks among you will know how many points that will earn you!
